This is still a work in progress as I upload tasting notes and wine labels from as far as 1999... Check back once in a while to get the updates.

2002 Da Party

Da Party at Conrad.

199x Jaboulet La Chapelle en magnum - drank very well.

1992 Chapoutier Barbe Rac en magnum

1992 Chapoutier Le Pavillon en magnum - this was OK.

1990 Chapoutier Le Pavillon en magnum - this needed more airing time.  It was clearly too powerful and not ready.  I was little bummed about having to bring this wine and commit infanticide.

1994 L'Eglise-Clinet en double magnum - OK but nothing to write home about.

Pol Roger White Foil - drank for the countdown.

December 29, 2002

1993 Ridge Santa Cruz

1993 Ridge Cabernet Santa Cruz Mountains - drank over dinner at Napa Valley.  My last bottle from the case.  Very good stuff.  Powerful, fruity nose.  A hint of spicy peppers.  Full-bodied, round tannins.

December 24, 2002

1994 Haut-Marbuzet + 1990 Rieussec

1994 Haut-Marbuzet - not interesting.  We had two bottles and neither really opened up.  Smooth tannins, yes, but not exciting to drink.

1990 Rieussec - lots of honey, nuts, orange, apricot in the nose.

December 21, 2002

1994 Beaucastel

1994 Beaucastel - drank over dinner at Au Trou Normand.  Pretty decent, but needed breathing time as it was too sharp when first opened.  Fruity, spicy nose opened up later.  Grilled meats, smoke, saddle, cherries, nose sweet but palate remained relatively acidic.

December 6, 2002

40th birthday party

Friend's 40th birthday party.

Charles Heidsieck Brut Réserve Mis en Cave en 1996 - pretty good.

2000 Chapoutier Crozes-Hermitage Blanc Petite Ruche - very light-bodied and refreshing.

1997 Les Carmes Haut-Brion - very smooth, light to medium-bodied, easy to drink.

1989 Climens - sweet enough with honey, caramel, apricot nose.

December 5, 2002

December 3, 2002

1998 Barde-Haut

1998 Barde-Haut - drank at Wolf.  This was pretty good.  Sweet nose with caramel notes, sweet on the palate.  Very approachable now.

MNSC Dinner - 1982 Right Bank

MNSC dinner at the Board Room in Grand Hyatt.  The last of the series of '82 dinners and the theme was 1982 Right Bank.

Pol Roger White Foil - not so impressed.  A little too sharp and young for me.

1982 Trotanoy

1982 Lafleur - what a beautiful wine! Started with a little bit of fruit in the nose, while being strong and powerful on the palate.  Opened later to a very sweet nose with loads of ripe fruit, grilled meat and mint.  Second favorite wine and almost on par with Petrus.

1982 Latour à Pomerol - drinking beautifully and almost on par with the big boys.  The best value of the evening given its fractional cost compared to the big guns.

1982 L'Evangile - very ripe fruit in the nose.  A bit of Chinese medicine and smoke.  Later on sweet grass emerged in the nose.  On the palate, the tannins were pretty rounded, with a good, long finish.

1982 L'Eglise-Clinet

1982 Petrus - you just can't say anything bad about this wine... This was absolutely amazing.  Very, very sweet nose.  Finish was long.  I was blown away by this wine.  My favorite wine of the night.  Everyone agreed that this was a great bottle.

November 29, 2002

Altaya Annual Tasting

1999 Falesco Vitiano - minty, a bit acidic.  Very drinkable wine, especially for the price.

1998 Falesco Montiano - ripe and fruity, marshmallow nose.  Also a bit minty.  Pretty concentrated and tannic.  Excellent wine and my favorite of the evening.

1999 de Colombier Hermitage - sharp, kerosene-like nose.  Not very pleasant.  Full of animal blood.  Nose actually reminds me of cheap Côtes-du-Rhône from Guigal or Jaboulet.

1999 de Monteillet Côte-Rôtie - open nose and a bit floral.  Not bad.

1999 de Font-Sane Gigondas Cuvée Futée - very solid.  Medium bodied.  Good effort.

1998 Les Cailloux Châteauneuf-du-Pape - nose a bit like grape juice.  Full of red fruits and stewed prunes.  Probably the best Rhône of the evening.

1998 Balestard-La-Tonnelle - oaky nose with stewed prunes.

1998 La Vieille-Cure - nose of tobacco, bacon, animal, leather and coffee.

1998 La Griffe de Cap d'Or - nose of roasted ground coffee, also a bit of "shit" nose, not very good.

1998 de Chambrun - pretty tannic on the palate.  Not pleasant drinking.

1998 Franc-Mayne - very flat and uninteresting.

1998 Haut Villet Cuvée Pomone - dry, tannic on the palate.  Nose of nuts, oak and some ripe fruit.

November 28, 2002

'93 Ausone + '62 Haut-Brion

Dinner at Plats.

1993 Ausone - this was a pretty good wine.  Nose of tobacco, minerals, earthy tones, and ripe prunes.  High alcohol and acetone in the nose at first, but faded after a little while.

1962 Haut-Brion - nose of sweet red fruit with tobacco overtones.  Pretty good stuff.

November 25, 2002

1988 Silver Oak Napa

1988 Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley - what an amazing wine!  Big bouquet of sweet, extracted, jammy red fruits.  Very smooth tannins, medium to full-bodied.  This can definitely age for some more years.

November 24, 2002

Overture

Overture - drank at Hotel Kajikaso in Hakone.  This is the non-vintage second wine of Opus One.  Opened in the morning and breathed for most of the day, so it was actually very drinkable by dinner time.  Pretty smooth, but not an amazing wine.

November 22, 2002

100-point '86 Paullacs

Dinner at Brian's in Tokyo.

1983 Dom Perignon - brought this bottle.  Very nice.  Crisp acidity, full of toasted oak and caramelized sugar.  Not many bubbles due to the age.

1973 DRC La Tâche - H-man brought this bottle.  Very good wine.  Another fine example of old, mature Burgundy.  Initially the color was so faded it looked like I was decanting apple juice!  But the nose opened up nicely with ripe red fruits, bacon, grilled meats.  Hmmm....

1986 Lafite-Rothschild - I brought this bottle.  Pretty sweet nose of red fruits, minerals, tobacco.  A bit of sweet grass.  Very good wine overall and glad it wasn't cooked while being stored in Taipei.

1986 Mouton-Rothschild - from H-man.  Very powerful.  Big, smoky cigar nose dominates everything.  Very full-bodied and long finish.  Minerals and grilled meats nose.

November 18, 2002

MNSC Dinner - '82 First Growths

MNSC dinner at Toscana.  Theme was '82 First Growths.

1982 Haut-Brion - very sweet nose, with grilled meats & leather.  A bit acidic at the end.  Pretty log finish.  Very good wine.

1982 La Mission Haut-Brion - nose of ripe, sweet red fruits, melon, with a long finish.  Turns acidic on the palate after 3 hours.

1982 Latour - my contribution.

1982 Lafite-Rothschild

1982 Mouton-Rothschild

1982 Margaux

November 16, 2002

A pair of '97 Right Banks

1997 La Gomerie - opened up after 40 minutes.  Sweet nose with vanilla notes.

1997 L'Evangile - minerals, blood, earth, grilled meats and bacon.

November 14, 2002

Unico, Pichon Baron and Pride

Dinner at Grissini.

1962 Vega Silicia Unico - Wow!  Amazing wine.  Very open, sweet and powerful.  I would say it's better than the '70 I opened for my birthday.

1989 Pichon-Baron - classic Bordeaux nose.  Very good.

1997 Pride Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon - powerful as usual.  Wow!  Total fruit bomb.  The nose blows everything else away.

November 9, 2002

1996 Rosemount Syrah Balmoral
1996 Torres Grans Muralles
1996 d'Arenberg Riesling the Noble

1989 Williams Selyem Pinot Noir Rochioli Vineyard
1989 Bahans Haut-Brion
1989 Palmer

October 28, 2002

1996 Les Carmes Haut-Brion

1996 Les Carmes Haut-Brion - drank at Fook Lam Moon.  Very nice and pleasant.

October 26, 2002

1998 Alter Ego

1998 Alter Ego de Palmer - the very first vintage for this wine.  Fairly forward and easy to drink.

October 5, 2002

1996 d'Arenberg Riesling the Noble

1996 d'Arenberg Riesling the Noble - same as it ever was when first opened.  Orange rind, glycerin, a bit of honeydew, very very sweet on the palate.  At the same time it was sharp on the palate.

October 4, 2002

1993 Dugat-Py Cœur de Roy

1993 Dugat-Py Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes Cœur de Roy - pretty bad when first opened.  Very acidic, nothing good in the nose.  Got a bit better with time.  More fruit and mushrooms, black olives, more Pinot-like.  After 2½ hours sweet honeydew emerged from the nose.  Pretty nice, but acidity was high throughout, and tannic.  Pretty disappointed with this.

October 2, 2002

1992 Sarget de Gruaud-Larose

1992 Sarget de Gruaud-Larose - still as good as it was the last time.  After airing the nose was very sweet, big nose of honeydew.  Very smooth on the palate.  Perfect for drinking right now.

September 29, 2002

1997 La Strada Pinot Noir Reserve

1997 La Strada Pinot Noir Reserve - pretty bad when first opened.  Really strong, alcoholic nose (14%!) that was sharp and like gasoline.  Took a long time to open up and soften, gradually fruit emerged, but this was nevera good bottle of wine.  Won't be buying this again.

September 27, 2002

1996 Syrah vs Shiraz

Dinner at Cine Citta.

1996 Kay Brothers Amery Shiraz Block 6 - I guessed it was a Californian Syrah, since it had the leather and game meat nose of Syrah but nose was too sweet to be Rhône.  Thought it was overpriced although it was a very good wine.

1996 Tardieu-Laurent Côte-Rôtie - nose was so typical Côte-Rôtie, especially like Guigal.  Amazingly perfumed nose of lavender, rose, stewed prunes, bacon fat, leather.  Wonderful stuff.  A bit light in body compared to the Block 6.

September 23, 2002

MNSC Dinner - 1982 Super-Seconds

MNSC Dinner at Golden Leaf.  Theme was 1982 Bordeaux Super-Seconds.

1982 Ducru-Beaucaillou - this was just like the last few bottles I had - relatively flat and unexciting.  Nose of sweet grass, medium-bodied.  After a long time, it opened up and was a bit better, more fruit in the nose.

1982 Léoville-Las Cases - this was much better and my favorite of the night.  Nose of jammy plum, coconut, with a hint of straw, and smoke/tobacco.  Full-bodied.  Very nice, but none of us felt that this deserved 100 points.

1982 Cos d'Estournel - this wasn't bad and well-received.  Nose of sweet berries, moss, pepper, smoke and veggies.  Pretty good but not as good as what we had at the Cos dinner.

1982 Pichon-Lalande - this was a bit acidic at first, especially when drunk with food, producing a sour after palate.  After a bit of time, became very fruity, also a bit of mint in the nose.  Pretty good, but again, not worth of "100".

1982 Gruaud-Larose - this was OK, but bad.  Nose of Chinese medicine, leather and smoked meats dominate.

September 14, 2002

1974 Gaja Barbaresco

1974 Gaja Barbaresco - drank at Grissini's.  This was pretty good.  Nose was very sweet and fruity, and pretty youthful and powerful.  Acidity was relatively high as expected, but not distracting.  Definitely worth buying.

September 13, 2002

Dinner at Brian's

Dinner at Brian's in Tokyo.

1983 Salon - really awesome stuff!  Nose of caramel was immediately apparent, plus yeast, sugar, honey, minerals and pineapple.  Even long after the wine was gone, the perfume remaining in the glass was wonderful and lingered.

1964 Leroy Echezeaux - Wow!  What else can be said about this wine?  Quite simply the best Burgundy I ever had, on par with the '70 La Tâche.  Powerful nose of cinnamon, leather saddle.  Amazingly sweet and still vibrant at the ripe old age of 38!  Need to get my hands on more of this wine!

Bought from Eslite for TWD 12,375.

1992 Kistler Cuvée Catherine - very powerful and sharp, a little too young at age 10!  Nose of mint, leaves, cherry, lead, plus gasoline, alcohol content was a bit high.  Has great potential and will improve with another 10 years!

1993 Harlan - unfortunately this proved to be disappointing.  It showed like a Bordeaux, like the last bottle of '93.  However there really wasn't much fruit, but rather earth, minerals and lead in the nose.  Maybe the wine had been decanted too long?  Hmmm...  It was better one year ago!

Bought from Vinum for SGD 600.

1992 Dalla Valle Maya - this was also disappointing, since it was 100 points.  Fruit was fairly faded and unimpressive, except for the roasted macadamia nuts (!)

The crowd favorite of the evening was the '64 Leroy.

September 10, 2002

MNSC Dinner - 1982 non-First, non-Super Second Left Bank

1982 Pichon Baron - sweet nose, with stewed prunes, ripe fruits, smoke, cedar and grass notes.  Pretty long finish.  Very good stuff.

1982 Montrose - very sweet and fruity nose, with heavy overtones of earth and minerals.

1982 Grand-Puy-Lacoste - nose of sweet red fruits, sweet grass and green veggies.  A bit disappointing.

1982 La Lagune - opened with nose of earth and "shit", but improved dramatically when opened up.

1982 Lynch-Bages - good with a sweet nose.  Overall very good... classic Bordeaux.

My favorite wines were the La Lagune followed by the Lynch-Bages.

September 6, 2002

1995 Carbonnieux

Dinner at Plats.

1995 Carbonnieux - this put all of our other wines to shame... Pretty good stuff!

September 5, 2002

1995 Philip Togni

Dinner at Brasserie on the Eighth.

1995 Philip Togni
- drank at Brasserie on the Eighth.  The nose continues to be very sweet and powerful, but not as much of a fruit bomb as I remember.  A bit more acidic, I think, than past tastings.  Pretty good effort!

Bought from Vinum for SGD 137.

September 2, 2002

1993 Guigal La Turque

Drank over dinner with family.

1993 Guigal La Turque - surprisingly good given the poor vintage, but that's a testament to Guigal's quality.  Throughout the night the perfumed nose was very powerful, with classic Côte-Rotie nose of strewed prunes, floral, lavender stemming from the Viognier.

Bought from Oaks for SGD 204.

August 26, 2002

MNSC dinner - forgotten years

MNSC dinner. Theme was "the forgetten years of 1993 and 1997".

First pair:

1997 Les Carmes Haut-Brion - showed heavy smoke, earthiness, stewed prunes. Rather enjoyable and not bad. Good drinking wine.

1997 La Mission Haut-Brion - initially it smelled of "shit" that reminded me of Beaucastel, but this faded and fruit core emerged. Ended up drinking better than the Les Carmes.

Second pair:

1993 Ducru-Beaucaillou - I recognized this very quickly. It had a vegetal nose, and the fruit was somewhat subdued, but this could be a result of opeing 1 hour earlier than the other wines. Anyway, smooth on the palate, with lots of finesse. Typical Ducru.

1993 Lafite-Rothschild - initially smelled of wet rag, this faded and beautiful red fruits showed. Very, very nice indeed!

Third pair:

1997 La Gomerie - this was very nice, showing wet chalk initially but turning into sweet vanilla and fruit, with oak treatment that reminded me of New World wines. In fact this would be halfway between old and new world.

1997 La Fleur-Petrus - this was my first taste of this wine. Very nice, indeed. Stewed fruits, nice on the palate.

August 19, 2002

Pahlmeyer and Armagh

Dinner with friends.

1997 Jim Barry The Armagh - drank very well. A bit typical of Aussie shiraz, with lots of new oak, sweet cotton candy, lots of red fruits and power. A bit of spice on the palate.

1997 Pahlmeyer Proprietary Red - took a while for this wine to open, but it was pretty powerful throughout, too. Vanilla and oak in the nose, a bit of earth and smoke in the beginning, but sweet fruit core opened up more with time. Very good but needs more breathing time than expected,.

Bought from Ponti for HKD 958.

August 10, 2002

1998 Petaluma Coonawarra

Dinner at a friend's place.

1998 Petaluma Coonawarra - must say that I was disappointed. Very closed and not ready at all. Lots of earth, minerals, and smoke. I would have guessed it was a Bordeaux! A little sweet fruit emerged with time, but tannins were very heavy. Needs lots of cellaring to round out the edges.

Bought from Jebsen for HKD 298.

July 30, 2002

1995 Climens

Drinking at home.

1995 Climens, en demi-bouteille - how amazing! This was just like Mondavi's botrytis! Huge nose of sweet honeydew! glycerin, honey, walnut, apricot. Wow! Didn't expect Sauternes to be this big! Wow, what a great deal!

Bought from Watson's for HKD 259.

July 29, 2002

98 Caymus Conundrum

Dinner at home.

1998 Caymus Conundrum - very good considering the price. A bit sweet on the palate. Minerals, pear, citrus. Very crisp and nice. A very good buy.

Bought from Remy for HKD 239.

94 Dujac

Dinner at Mirabelle in London.

1994 Dujac Clos Saint-Denis - not bad at all. Very good nose and smooth. Drinking very well for a poor vintage year.

Bought from the restaurant for GBP 160. Not cheap.

July 15, 2002

MNSC dinner - Nicholini's

MNSC dinner at Nicholini's. Theme was Barolos and Barbarescos.

1990 Aldo Conterno Barolo Vigna Cicala - have to say that in general I was not a fan of these traditional style Barolos. Acidity was too high for me. The wines were decent but none struck me as "wow". I'll stick to Gaja in the future.

Bought from Vinum.

July 13, 2002

91 Bin 707

Dinner at One Harbour Road.

1991 Penfolds Cabernet Sauvignon Bin 707 - very powerful, sweet fruit, oak, coconut, vanilla. Very good stuff.

Bought from Farr Vintners for GBP 42.

July 10, 2002

97 Clos Apalta

Dinner at Annexx.

1997 Casa Lapostolle Clos Apalta - pretty nice. Nose of caramel, coconut, mocha, strawberry. Very New World and forward. Very Michel Rolland. Acidity was a bit high, still very young so full-bodied and there was a good amount of tannins. But surprisingly lots of sediment here.

Bought from Shinanoya for JPY 7,350.

July 5, 2002

La Mouline and Pride

Dinner at Cinecitta.

1983 Guigal La Mouline - nose was wonderfully explosive, with bacon fat, game meats, nutmeg, with sweet fruit. Really amazing. After a while glycerin started to show in the nose. With an open decanter, the wine started to fade after 2½ hours. Very nice, and a great wine until it fell apart.

Bought from Vinum for SGD 660.

1998 Pride Mountain Vineyards Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon - wow! Typical Californian, with loads of sweet, ripe fruit. Alcohol levels high thanks to the ripeness. Very concentrated, full-bodied with firm tannins, but fairly drinkable. Color is ink black. Nose also had lots of strawberry cotton candy and caramel. Pretty good stuff.

June 24, 2002

MNSC dinner - Brasserie on the Eighth

MNSC dinner at Brasserie on the Eighth hosted by me, for my birthday.

1985 Krug - this was well-received. Very nice and crisp. Great way to start.

Bought from Farr Vintners for GBP 71.

1970 DRC La Tâche - everyone thought it was a Rhône, a Côte-Rôtie. If I didn't know what I brought, I would have sworn it was a La Turque, except there was no La Turque in 1970! The nose was very sweet, strawberries, leather, roasted game meats, cotton candy. The color was light brown with amber edge. Obviously showing its age. Clarity was low, as if all the sediment couldn't be removed. Acidity was obviously high. Wow! This was an unbelievably sexy wine. Everything great about old Burgundies... soft, supple. Gotta get more of this! My vote for the wine of the evening.

Bought from 易元 for TWD 14,000.

1970 Beaulieu Vineyard Georges de Latour Private Reserve - nice nose of cotton candy and toffee. Palate was very nice and rich, better than last time. But after a while a bit of chalk developed in the nose.

Bought from the winery for USD 250.

1970 Vega Sicilia Unico - this was my first Unico, and I wasn't disappointed. The nose was very sweet and forward, very Californian. Hint of caramel, color was medium ruby, amazing for its age. Still very powerful on the palate. This was really good, my second favorite of the evening.

Bought from Farr Vintners for GBP 208.

1970 Latour - very disappointed. Very typical Bordeaux, nose was full of earth, sweet grass or hay, vegetal. No sweet fruit at all. This is just like Parker said of his recent tastings. Color was very ink-like still. Still powerful, but not ready.

1959 Huët Vouvray Le Haut-Lieu Moelleux - nose was full of toasty oak and straw, a bit like vin de paille. Not very sweet on the palate. Elegant. Not bad, but I thought it would a great old "sticky" so I guess I was a little disappointed.

Bought from Fine and Rare Wines for GBP 60.

Full post on dinner is here.

June 22, 2002

1970 Palmer

Dinner at San San Trois.

1970 Palmer - this took 1 hour to open up. Smooth and silky on the palate. Nose of Asian spices, stewed fruits and prunes. Still disappointing. Maybe it's fading or closed down.

Bought from Vinum for SGD 395.

June 21, 2002

1970 and more

Dinner at Brown.

Krug Grande Cuvée - very nice. Sharp acidity, refreshing, drunk up quickly.

Bought from Watson's Wine Cellar for HKD 900.

1996 Blanc de Lynch-Bages - not bad. Exactly what I expected. Nice toasted oak, not too heavy.

Bought from Ponti for HKD 450.

1970 Chasse-Spleen - typical Bordeaux. Very smooth and velvety on the palate. Finish was a little short. Some fruit left here but mostly tobacco, smoke, and earth.

Bought from Fine and Rare Wines for GBP 35.

1970 Marques de Murrieta Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial, from magnum - WOW! What a great wine! Nose of coconut and vanilla, surprisingly fruity still, very vibrant. As expected the acidity was a bit high. Very powerful. Glad I bought this.

Bought from Ponti for HKD 2,500.

1955 Romer du Hayot - I've wanted to try this for a long time. Nose of pineapple. Palate was a little bitter like marmalade. Sharp and alcoholic. Sweet but not honey and nectar-like. Not bad.

Bought from Bacchus for SGD 192.

June 14, 2002

Syrah and Aussie

Dinner at home.

1995 Chapoutier Crozes-Hermitage Les Varonniers - this came highly recommended by Parker at 95 points. Pretty disappointed! At first it was very chalky, not pleasant. With time the fruit core came out, pretty sweet, nose of smoke meats. I think it just needs lots of time to breathe before drinking.

Bought from Farr for GBP 20.

1997 Penfolds RWT - this was the first vintage. Everything I expected from Penfolds for a new-style shiraz - full of coconut and caramel, with smoked meats at the same time. The typical Aussie shiraz nose of strawberry and cotton candy. I liked this.

Bought for HKD 530.

1996 Joseph Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot - very sweet as usual, thanks to the amarone style. Everything as expected.

Bought from Oaks for SGD 66.50.

June 13, 2002

91 Leroy Beaux Monts

Dinner with a friend.

1991 Domaine Leroy Vosne-Romanée Les Beaux Monts - this was an amazing wine. Very complex, black cherries, a bit of game meats, otherwise intense bouquet of sweet fruits. Wow! And it's pretty cheap, too!

June 11, 2002

86 Ducru

Dinner at Solstice.

1986 Ducru-Beaucaillou - pretty good. Tannins rounded now although still firm relatively speaking. Classic Ducru. I really liked it.

Bought from Duty Free for HKD 1,000.

June 3, 2002

96 Julius Koch

Drinking at home.

1996 Julius KochUngsteiner Honigsäckel Riesling Spätlese - pretty good stuff. Refreshing and floral.

June 2, 2002

2000 Schloss Johannisberg

Drinking at home.

2000 Schloos Johannisberg Riesling Grünlack Spätlese - pretty good. A little sweet, as expected from a spätlese. Wonderful nose of lychee, poire Williams, and a touch of floral bouquet.

Bought from Remy for HKD 238.

June 1, 2002

Cali pinots and more

Dinner at a friend's home.

1996 Etude Pinot Noir Carneros - this was not bad. A bit light-bodied but nevertheless had a pretty good nose.

1995 David Bruce Pinot Noir Chalone Vineyard - this was pretty powerful as expected. Big nose of black cherries. Very enjoyable.

Bought from 易元 for TWD 900.

1994 Joseph Phelps Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley - not many surprises here. Typical Phelps cab, sweet but not too much oak. More earthy and smoke, kinda like Bordeaux. Good drinking wine.

May 28, 2002

97 Clarendon Liandra

Dinner at Onion.

1997 Clarendon Hills Liandra Shiraz - not bad at all. Typical Aussie shiraz with sweetness and oak.

Bought from Evergreen for TWD 1,400.

May 27, 2002

MNSC dinner - Mandarin Grill

MNSC dinner at the Mandarin Grill, hosted by the Ox.

1985 Moët et Chandon Cuvée Dom Pérignon - this had lots of toasty oak, walnut, burng and glazed sugar, and crème caramel nose. Very good stuff.

1986 Cos d'Estournel - still fairly tannic. Some sweet fruits on the nose. A bit acidic.

1986 Léoville Las Cases - nose was not very open initially, but gradually showed notes of marshmallow, strawberry, and coconut.

1986 Pichon Lalande - a bit vegetal, with grassy sweetness and green pepper notes.

1986 Gruaud Larose - this showed a good nose of sweet berries and smoked meats.

1994 Dominus - I was fooled into thinking that it was a classic Bordeaux. There was a slightly medicinal nose, smoky, with a bit of sweet, round tannins. Some mineral notes.

1995 Kracher Grande Cuvée Trockenbeerenauslese Nr. 12, from half bottle - this was very good, with notes of acetone and sweet honeydew melon.
